Stephanie Johnson began her dance training as a student of the Calvert School of Dance. Calvert, which holds a place in the top 50 Northeastern Schools under the Federation of Dance Competitions, was founded over thirty years ago by her mother, Priscilla Mooradian. A love and passion for dance was cultivated in Stephanie at an early age and she studied ballet, tap, jazz, contemporary, gymnastics, pointe and modern until she graduated from high school. In the fall of 2007 she traveled to Hofstra University in New York to study ballet and modern dance. Once there, she studied in-depth the art of dance education within the university's dance program, was accepted on the nationally ranked competitive dance team, HUDT, and also danced for the student run organization, Danceworks. She moved back to the DC/Metro area and finished her studies at the University of Maryland, College Park where she completed her degree in Ancient Mediterranean History. Although she had little to no prior experience, within her first year at UMD, she furthered her interest and involvement in the dance world through her membership with Phunktions Hip Hop Dance Company. By using her competitive dance background, after only her first year with the team, Stephanie became the director. By her second year as director, she was able to bring her team to placing first at DMV competitions such as Rip the Floor. Alongside her friend and co-director, Greg David, she continued to push the limits of her hip hop knowledge by teaching, choreographing, and competing until she graduated from Maryland in Spring 2011.While fulfilling her requirements as a student at the University, Stephanie also held numerous professional tap and jazz performance jobs under choreographer Karma Camp and composer Marvin Hamlisch at the Kennedy Center located in Washington, D.C., and was also employed as a judge for the touring dance competition, OnStage America. Following her college graduation, Stephanie continued her involvement at the Calvert School of Dance, training students in both hip hop and contemporary styles. While living in DC she took on many dance opportunities, including performing for competitive hip hop crew, Kick Rocks Crew, as well as dancing for the non-profit dance company, Culture Shock DC. She toured with Culture Shock for three years and was named a choreography captain her last year with the organization. Following her touring and training with both dance groups, she moved to New York City to further her focus in the contemporary dance scene. She continues to train professionally in both hip hop and contemporary under favorite instructors such as Derek Mitchell, Hannah Frederick, Kristin Sudeikis, Mike Esperanza , Candace Brown, Neil Schwartz and Jared Jenkins. She has had the opportunity to perform in the Brooklyn Dance Festival and remains in the teaching field by guesting at Culture Shock DC, University of Maryland and Calvert School of Dance. She currently holds a permanent teaching position as a hip hop and contemporary dance instructor at Variations Dance Studio in Huntington, Long Island.
